Snowflake Factory

We had the first few flakes of the season over the weekend, and it inspired us to make some of our own.

I like making snowflakes– and although it may seem frivolous, we are really laying the foundation for quite a few mathematical concepts.

In the folding of the paper students have to make both halves and thirds, and what better way to get experience in the concept of symmetry than to cut something that is folded and feel the amazement as it is unfolded?

Anyway, it was amazing to me that some of the snowflakes pictured below were the first that these students had ever made.
